Walk Name | The Bert Ward Walk |
Description | It's a circular walk. We’ll head out of Longshaw, go over White Edge, skirt round Big Moor, and drop into the Cordwell Valley and then walk up to Holmesfield. We then head towards Totley before turning west and going past Storth House where Bert Ward lived. From there we cross Totley Moor to reach Fox House and finish back at Longshaw In the autumn of 1900, GHB (Bert) Ward (1876-1957) placed an advert in a socialist newspaper, The Clarion, inviting people to join him on a moorland walk. As a result, on 2 September 1900, 13 people came together for what is thought to be the first ever organised public walk –around the Kinder Scout plateau. This led to the formation of the Sheffield Clarion Ramblers, which became a forerunner of the Ramblers Association, and our walking group. |
