Walk Name | Matlock South along the Derwent valley |
Description | This is a wander along the Derwent valley south from Matlock taking in High Tor, Matlock Bath, Cromford, High Peak Trial, High Peak Junction and the Cromford Canal then back thorough Matlock Bath. The route crisscrosses the valley so there are numerous ascents and descents, these can be steep but short – apart from the descent from Black Rocks to High Peak Junction which is long but steady. Most of the route is on well surfaced paths and tarmac but there are a couple of sections through woodland which can be muddy and slippery, particularly the descent into Cromford. The route round High Tor has some exposure but there is an alternative route if required. I have graded this as a 3 due to the steepness of some of these ascents/descents and the exposure on High Tor. |

Start Point | Hall Leys Park Bandstand |
Start Point Details | Hall Leys Park is the large park adjacent to the A615 and the football ground. The bandstand is in the middle of the park in front of the Café in the Park. There are public long stay pay and display car parks in the town at the station and on Matlock Bank, cost is £6 for all day. I usually road park higher up Matlock Bank or on the adjacent roads where there are no restrictions. What3words: eradicate.nuzzled.bombshell |
