Walks Programme: June 2013

Route: From the car park we head up hill then through Wortley Hall grounds, over undulating rural countryside to Stainborough Park and Wentworth Castle (with its follies and gardens including national plant collections) and its Grade 1 listed parkland laid out in the early 1800s, where we can potentially see the deer herds and progress with is glasshouse restoration.

Notes: Trans-Pennine Trail Car Park -From Sheffield direction: on A629 just before you enter Wortley 30mph stretch turn left down Finkle Street. Follow this downhill for about 0.6 mile. Before first building on right (Cote Green) and bridge turn right onto track just after Pennine Equine yellow and green sign and phone box (there is a sign for the Trans-Pennine Trail car park but it is hidden by a phone box as you approach using these directions-you will see it as you turn into the track). Drive along track through Pennine Equine livery stables. The car park is after the stable buildings on left. The ground can be rough and muddy or slippery in places if wet. Route may vary depending on weather conditions. Please check website for any last minute changes (eg due to weather). No Toilets at start of the walk. Refreshments available at the end of the walk in Wortley or Thurgoland. There may also be a stop at Wentworth Castle Gardens Terrace Tearooms but please bring packed lunch with you. To ensure the enjoyment of all who participate, numbers will be restricted to 20. Dog Friendly but as there will be deer and young animals in the fields only well behaved dogs to be kept on short leads at all times. Please let me know if you are bringing a dog.

Route: A moderate walk in the finest area in the White Peak: Alstonefield, Milldale, Dovedale,Thorpe Cloud, Ilam, Manifold Valley, Thor's Cave, Wetton, Alstonefield

Notes: 1. Three free car parks in Alstonefield. In order to avoid confusion, the start point is the front of the George pub. Car parks and way to the pub are clearly sign posted!
2. Toilet facilities at Alstonefield, Milldale, Dovedale and Ilam and possibly at other points on the walk.
3. Refreshments available on the way and opportunity to celebrate/dine at The George (described as “perfect”) at the end of the walk. See Message Board for further details.

Route: From Tintwistle we walk to Lads Leap and then inland to the trig point. Then to Laddow rocks and up to Black Hill. Then Holme Moss. Follow the skyline to Dead Edge End and down to Woodhead Tunnel.Up path on Near Back Clough.Off path walking to Stable Clough. Follow edge to Wildboar Clough. Off path the Torside Clough. Off path to Ogden Clough and back to Tintwistle.

Notes: A long day. Be considerate as it is street parking in Tintwistle

Route: A lovely two river walk along the Rivelin & Loxley Valleys with a gentle hop over the hill at Stannington. There is a strong chance that we will stop for some liquid refreshment in Stannington!

Route: From Edale we walk north over Kinder Scout, Bleak;low and Black Hill. Train back to Sheffield

Notes: A long day. The walk will take around 11.5 to 12 hours.There is no real escape route as there is no public transport on route

Route: Dales of Tansley, Cressbrook, Millers, Monks, Peter and Hay.

Notes: Toilet and pubs in village. A repeat of last year’s walk. Easy walking but Monks Dale is rocky and can be quite slippy. Hoping there’ll be lots of flowers out. Budding botanists welcome!

Route: Leave Chapel road towards Barns Hall, then into Greno woods and then to Wharncliffe woods, to Wortley, leave Wortley and then to Howbrook, then Highgreen to Charlton Brook and back to the Crown and Cushion for refreshments.

Notes: To get to the meeting place you need to be on the A629 Burncross road, at Burncross just up from Chapeltown and Chapel road is a turn off where you can park across from the Crown and Cushion. Dogs not allowed in the pub. Hopefully nice weather.

Route: Fairholmes – Rowley pastures - Alport Castles – Howden Dam - Fairholmes

Start Point Location: Fairholmes car park (Pay & Display) If you arrive early enough, there is free parking at Derwent Overlook, this is on the right hand side just before Fairholmes. Grid Reference: OL1 Dark Peak 173 893 Map

Notes: There is a steep ascent at the start up onto Rowley Pastures. The rest of the walk is fairly straightforward on good paths. Toilets at the start.

Route: A circuit of Dale Dyke reservoir followed a sustained climb to cross Ughill Moor. The return route includes descending quite steeply through the grounds of Sugworth Hall to Strines reservoir. Mainly footpaths, with a couple of short sections on quiet roads.
