The meeting point will normally be at the start of the walk as detailed in the programme. We suggest people use the message board to share lifts. We will endeavour to supply details of public transport to get you to the start of a walk but if you need help the walk leader should be able to advise..

Saturday 31st July

 

Yet another of "The Edges"     

 

From the Robin Hood, we walk along Birchen Edge and White Edge to Longshaw. We then make our way down Padley Gorge and then climb gradually up to Frogatt Edge and walk back along Curbar and Baslow Edges to finish with a welcome drink in the Robin Hood.

Although a long walk, it is not a difficult walk with comparatively little ascent and descent! On a good day there are some excellent views!

Sunday 1st August

 

Three Peaks Challenge - Langsett to Edale

 

No, not those three peaks, or the other three, but there are three stiff climbs on this linear walk from Langsett to Edale. After getting the bus to Langsett we follow the side of Langsett Reservoir then embark on our first climb up the Cut Gate path to Margery Hill to get a good view of the valley and Howden Reservoir. We then descend to the reservoir path and then the second climb of the day up to Alport castles. Then it’s down once again to Alport farm, cross over the A57 then up once more to Crookstone Knoll. We then follow the edge and descend to Edale to get the train home.

 

 Start Point and Time

Get the 57A bus from Sheffield Interchange at 9.00. Walk leader will meet you at Langsett Road/Bamford Street. These are the current bus times. Please check nearer the date.

Additional Information

 

A long, hard walk with a lot of ascent which will need to be done at a reasonable pace. However, you will have legs like tree trunks afterwards (all brown and knobbly). This walk will only take place in good weather. Much of the walk is exposed moorland with no shelter. This is a linear walk using public transport.

Grouse Evening Walk  

 

Walk with mixture of woodlands and and edges near the Grouse Inn.

Langsett Reservoir     

 

Start off from from Langsett Barn, heading off over the bridge and above the reservoir, then down to Dunford Bridge and back up to Langsett Barn and pub for refreshments.

Sunday 8th August (harder walk)

 

Howden Watershed

 

From Fairholmes we go up to the Howden Dam.We ascend the Howden moors. We follow the edge via Margery Hill, Outer Edge to swains head. From there we descend into S wains greave and then up to Barrow Stones. we follow the ridge to Bleaklow Stones and then aim for the trig point near to Alport.We go to Alport castles and then back to Fairholmes via Lockerbridge farm. Although a long walk once up on the ridge reasonable walking except for one ascent half way round. Walk run last year. views were superb.

10.00 am at Fairholmes Park centre 173893. Personally I will park in one of the lay byes which is free and meet you at Fairholmes.

A hilly walk through limestone country from Monsal Head alround Millers Dale and Monsal Dale returning along the river gorge and Monsal Trail

Sunday 15th August

 

Dunsford Bridge

 

We head north from Winscar Reservoir to take the Holme Valley Circular walk round to the impressive north escarpment of Black Hill. We enter Ramsden Clough along a rough track and narrow path on steep ground for closer inspection before topping out on the summit of Snailsden Pike with hopefully expansive views. Depending on the conditions we may return on intermittent paths with some rough ground on the secluded western side of Winscar or rejoin the easier outward route near Harden.

Shortly after the arrival of the 57A bus (see Additional Info) from Sheffield ( due 10:00 ) at Trans Pennine Trail car park SE 159 026.

Additional Information

 

This walk is timed so people have the choice to use the 57A bus departing Sheffield Interchange 09:00 and running via Infirmary Rd to Hillsborough (09:10 at Middlewood Rd/Taplin Rd) then A6102 to Deepcar & Stocksbridge. Stagecoach Sheffield tickets are valid as far as Dunford Bridge including their Bus Dayrider (currently £3) and Bus & Tram Dayrider (£3.50). Travel Line 01709 515151 can give further info.

People wanting to car share can use this websites message board. Hillsborough Park car park (entrance on Parkside Rd near its junction with Penistone Rd) may be a good meeting point for you.

The public toilets at Winscar shown on the OS maps are now permanently closed and there is no nearby alternative.

Two edges round     

 

A walk along the more remote parts of Stanage Edge and back along Bamford Edge with fine views of the Hope Valley and Ladybower (on a good day!). Cutthroat Bridge - Moscar - Stanage Edge - Hollin Bank - Bole Hill - Bamford Edge.

Layby on A57 300m to the East of Cutthroat Bridge (ie large layby on left before you get to Cutthroat Bridge as you head out of Sheffield on A57. Grid ref: SK 217 874 10.00am start.

Edale Skyline     

 

From Hope station we go up Win Hill and from there onto Kinder. We follow the southern edge of Kinder to Brown Knoll. Then we go across to Rushup Edge and onto Mam Tor.We follow the great Ridge to Lose Hill and down into Hope and the nearest pub!

Saturday 28th August

 

Marsden - Hebden Bridge

 

Bring your passport as we venture out of Derbyshire. After getting the train to Marsden we follow the Station to Station walk up the Pennine Way to Greenhole Hill. Then it’s over the motorway to Robin Hood’s Bed to Blackstone Edge Reservoir and the Rochdale Way. We then loop round Warland Reservoir to head towards the impressive Stoodley Pike monument and down into Hebden Bridge (which I hear is very trendy) for a few pints and the train back to Sheffield. Magic darts!

Outside WH Smiths at Sheffield Station at 8:15* to get the 8:36 train to Marsden. (This is the current timetable. Check nearer the time for details.)

This is a linear walk using the train. I’ve also got vague ideas about having a meal maybe in Hebden before getting back but we maybe too smelly to be allowed in anywhere. * Given the length of walk and time of year this will be at a brisk pace but we may still arrive in Sheffield quite late.

Revidge from Hartington

 

We head across green fields and up to the quiet hamlet of Sheen with its copper roofed church before descending to cross the River Manifold at the former mill at Brund. A long but gentle ascent then takes up to the heather moor around the 400m summit of Revidge. We descend via Warslow with aerial views of the Manifold valley as it cuts through limestone and of the old copper workings of Ecton Hill before returning to Hartington via pasture and up the gorge of Beresford Dale.

Parking in Hartington may be hard to find on this Bank Holiday weekend, so this walk is timed to offer you the choice of using the friendly TM Travel 181 bus from Sheffield. Departs 09:00 from Sheffield Interchange then A61 to Meadowhead roundabout via Heeley & Woodseats (09:10), then Batemoor, Coal Aston, Dronfield, D.Woodhouse, Owler Bar (due 09:40) and into the Peak Park. Travel Line 01709 515151 can give further information.

The Owler Bar stop is almost opposite the Peacock Inn on the Baslow/southwest side of the roundabout. It is possible to park in the layby on the Sheffield/northeast side of the roundabout just off the A621. Return 181 due Owler Bar 18:15, Sheffield Interchange 18:50.

Sample adult return fares (July 2010): £5.50 from Sheffield, £4.60 from Owler Bar. Car Park at south end of Hartington £4.70 (no change given).

Public Toilets at south end of the village. No mobile reception in Hartington.

A walk through the limestone dales and meadows around Youlgreave to Robin Hood’s Stride and along part of the Limestone Way. Youlgreave – Bradford Dale – Long Dale - Elton – Robin Hood’s Stride – Allport - Youlgreave.

Wessenden Moor from Marsden

 

From Marsden in lovely West Yorkshire we follow the canal then climb up to Denshaw Moor before turning south along Stanedge. Then it's on to Swellands Reservoir and White Moss and after crossing the A635, Wessenden Moor and Black Hill. We then turn north-west to Wessenden Head on the Pennine Way, skirt the Kirklees Way and Butterly Reservoir until we arrive back in Marsden.
